Instructional Materials Available This website is dedicated to helping LDS parents teach their children to read using the Book of Mormon. The materials provided through this website were taken from the tutorial manual, Teaching Your Children To Read Using the Book of Mormon written by Grant Von Harrison, noted authority on reading instruction. Dr. Harrison developed and validated these materials while on the faculty at Brigham Young University. After two decades of researching the best methods for teaching reading, and extensive research of the Book of Mormon as a text for learning to read, Dr. Harrison concluded that the Book of Mormon is ideal as a text for learning to read. It provides children with extensive practice with every critical sub-skill of reading; more so than other books and materials. Using the Book of Mormon to teach reading also gives parents the opportunity to teach principles of the gospel and interject feelings about the book. According to Dr. Harrison, if a parent or adult will systematically tutor children when they start school, they should be able to read the Book of Mormon independently by age 8. At LDS Literacy you will find tutoring guidelines, a sound guide, and Unit I (the first 100 pages) from the manual Teaching Your Children To Read Using the Book of Mormon that can be downloaded free. These materials are intended to be used with beginning readers. If children are older with remedial needs, this site provides information on how you can purchase a full copy of the manual which has Units II and III that provide instruction for more advanced reading skills. |
